I felt that way in the first game, but not near as bad. I did not think the game was very scary either, its hard to be scared when you are just frustrated and confused. The main enemies chasing you all game die in forgettable and unsatisfying ways. The story was also very hard to follow and after beating it I just feel more confused about what happened. The microphone was a cool idea, but felt unreliable. In my opinion, the game and its mechanics are fundamentally flawed and resulted in a very frustrating experience. Running past everything took less pain, effort and time than actually hiding, which is what you are meant to do. I completely gave up trying to hide after while and just ran past enemies. Even with the night mode on, I found myself running right into enemies even when I was watching for them. The night mode on the camera was horrible, as you were only able to see about two feet in front of you. Combine that with the fact enemies just seeker missile you even if you are hiding, and being in almost pitch blackness with an insanely low FOV, I could almost never tell where I was. I felt constantly lost and confused about what to do and where to go. The problem with this game, for me, is that the game forces you into unwinnable situations and explains nothing. The first game did everything better, in every way. I'll be completely honest, I did not love this game. Therefore I can only assume that the cult turned to mass murder to solve its housing crisis. But the cultist town doesn't seem large enough to have ever housed the hundreds upon hundreds of bodies about the place. Being in a labyrinthine school with a ton of doors and figuring out where to go is beyond frustrating, and to see if a door is locked you have to go through this animation of pressing to rattle the door only to find it locked, which after the 50th doors gets pretty tedious.Īlso, the environment of the cult just doesn't make a lot of sense, there are dead bodies everywhere, absolutely everywhere. There are also these flashback scenes in a school which offer a very interesting background to the character but…THE DOORS. Being chased mostly by malnourished 40-year-old men really isn’t that scary and although there are parts with big bad villains that chase you they still aren’t even close to being as scary as those from the original. Swapping from a claustrophobic asylum, full of deranged, deformed psychopaths, to a religious redneck murder cult was not a change that landed well with me. Very disappointing considering how much I enjoyed the original and the DLC.
